Wizz Air launches seven new routes from Sarajevo and adds second aircraft to its base

Today, an airline company Wizz Air announced that a second aircraft will be added to its base in Sarajevo. New Airbus A320 will join the fleet in December 2021, enabling the start of seven new routes from Sarajevo to Frankfurt, Cologne, Hamburg (Germany), Venice (Italy), Billund (Denmark), Malmo (Sweden) and Oslo (Norway). The increase of frequencies of the airline’s existing flight routes to Copenhagen, Dortmund, Gothenburg Landvetter, Stockholm Skavsta and Memmingen/Munich West has been announced as well.

Wizz Air started its flight operations from Bosnia and Herzegovina in May 2013 and so far it has carried 1.5 million passengers. With today's announcement, by the winter, it will have the fleet of two modern, state of the art young aircraft in Sarajevo base. New capacities will ensure more than 334.000 seats per year and further contribute to the local market by creating more than 30 direct job positions in Wizz Air.  Along with seven new services, Wizz Air now offers 18 routes to 10 countries from Sarajevo.

Speaking at the press conference, Robert Carey, the President of Wizz Air Group said: We are delighted to announce further expansion of our local network by adding one new aircraft to Sarajevo base.  We are confident that Wizz Air will make travel affordable to ever more passengers in Sarajevo. Our crew looks forward to welcoming customers on-board our young and green fleet of Airbus aircraft.”

On behalf of Sarajevo International Airport, Executive Director of Air Traffic and Aviation Services, Elvedin Begić addressed the audience: ’’We are happy that today we witness the decision of our partners, the airline company Wizz Air on network expansion of its destinations and allocation of the second aircraft as a part of its base at our airport. This is the evidence of the interest of passengers as well as the need to connect Bosnia and Herzegovina to the world even better.

With this celebration, these days we are especially happy and emotional, because, on Sunday, 15th August is 25 years since Sarajevo airport was opened for commercial air traffic after the war. In a previous period, it has been invested a lot of knowledge, efforts and work to rise from the ruins and ashes, but it was all worth it because we witness that in these difficult times of crisis, good foundations were created on which we further build, develop, expand and create path for better and more successful future.
